Top loading washing machines
The popular traditional top loading washing machine may vary in quality, from the stainless steel or plastic drum, to the detergent, bleach and fabric softener dispensers. Although this type of washing machine uses more water and energy, the price of the appliance may often be the deciding factor for the home owner. The regular top loading washing machine uses a swirling agitator and it holds up to sixteen pounds of laundry. With the capability of various cycles, from the delicate to the extra heavy power wash, it provides sufficient care for the average family's laundry.
The HE (high efficiency) top loading washing machine will hold up to twenty pounds of clothes. Since the laundry is cleaned by a lifting and tumbling action instead of a swirling agitator, this type of washing machine uses less water and also saves energy. The fast spinning action dries the clothes quickly, but often causes the fabrics to wrinkle.
Front loading washing machines
Formerly used commercially, the high end shopper prefers the front loading washing machine, which provides a cleaner wash as it lifts and drops the clothes. With the lifting and dropping motion and the use of low suds detergent, it is gentler on the clothes. Although it costs more up front, this high performance front loading washing machine will provide savings in the long run, since it is energy efficient and uses less water than the top loading washing machine. This type provides various wash cycles, temperature settings, water levels and spin speeds. Holding up to twenty pounds of laundry, the front loading washing machine is typically quieter, but the high speed of the spin cycle often causes vibrations.
Washer/dryer combos
The apartment, RV or vacation home may require a space saving washer/dryer combo unit. Popular in Europe, this smaller than standard washing machine provides the capability of washing nine to ten pounds of laundry. As the humidity is eliminated due to the condensing drying system, there is no need to install a vent. The wash/dry cycle is combined, but the option to use only the wash cycle is possible. The washer/dryer combination unit's complete cycle, wash and dry, takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
No matter what type washing machine you purchase, top loading, front loading or washer/dryer combo, be sure it has a satisfactory warranty. These appliances may come in various finishes and colors.
