Fisher & Paykel Appliances, makers of the washing machines by the same name, split off from Fisher & Paykel Industries in 2001. Sir Woolf Fisher and Maurice Paykel founded the company in New Zealand in 1934. Fisher & Paykel began as an importer, but soon began manufacturing its own products. By 1968 the company was exporting its appliances. In the following decades Fisher & Paykel increasingly focused on innovation, bringing the ECS direct drive washing machine to market. Following the 2001 split, Fisher & Paykel Appliances expanded into new markets by acquiring companies in the United States and Italy.
